Open 2-Day Field Trial - 4th/5th November 2024
The Club held its 2-Day Open Qualifying Stake at the Packington Estate on 4th and 5th November 2024 by kind permission of Lord and Lady Guernsey and under the watchful eye of Headkeeper and Steward of the Beat Aaron Taylor. Aaron’s team of beaters and stops worked tirelessly to provide a steady flow of game and we thank them for that. Thank you as well to the picker up.
David Brown organised an exceptional team of guns for the two days. They were very experienced and knew exactly what the trial needed and they shot very well. Thank you to you all for your tremendous contribution to the days.
Thank you to the excellent judges who kindly gave up their time to judge this trial when they would almost certainly have got a run in one of the other trials taking place on these days. They were a very good team giving the dogs and handlers every opportunity to shine. Thank you to David Field, Wendy Glue, Nicola Reynolds and Simon Capstick.
Huge thanks to the wonderful team of helpers too - Chief Steward Lauren Wright, Stewards Jane Best, Luke Nightingale and Jackie Martin, and game carriers Pip Wheatcroft and Gary Rogers. And thank you to the competitors. There was a very nice camaraderie in the gallery and some lovely dog work to see, particularly on Day 1.
1st Place, awarded The FtCh Deerbridge Alex Trophy, The Cornwood Salver, £100, a Skinners voucher and a place at the 2024 Championships – Riverrush Flow, owned and handled by Adam Holmes
Gun’s Choice and awarded The Foxhanger Tankard – Marstonprior Grenadier Of Wedgnock, owned and handled by Steve Richardson
Best Retrieve and awarded The Norlands Trophy – Stauntonvale Caracal, owned and handled by Patti Money-Coutts
And finally thank you to our sponsors Skinners and Silent Pool Gin for all that you do for us.
Novice Field Trial - 10th September 2024
We were very fortunate to hold a 14-dog Novice stake at Windsor Great Park by gracious invitation of His Majesty the King and The Crown Commissioners. Head Keeper and Steward of the Beat, Peter Clayton, and his very capable team looked after us wonderfully, as always. A duck drive started the day and the rest of the trial was walked up in white grass. We were so lucky with the weather – a steady breeze but no rain and not too cold and the scenting conditions were good. The atmosphere throughout the trial was very convivial.
Our team of crack guns, all veterans of shooting at Windsor, was kindly organised by John Stubbs and they let very little escape their efforts. We appreciate them shooting for the club enormously because, without them, we would have no sport. Thank you very much!
Our judges for the day were Jason Mayhew, Liz Barnes, Tom Sage and Liz Taylor. Huge thanks to all of them for their support and for making time in your busy schedules to come and judge for the club. Thank you to Heather Bradley for picking up for us.
We would also like to say a big thank you to the helpers and Committee members who turn up without fail and who do so much to ensure the day is a success. Without you, the trials would not happen.
Thank you, too, to our sponsors Skinners, who do so much for our sport and for our club, and to Silent Pool Gin. We are so grateful for your support.
The awards were as follows:
1st, receiving The Hydonsdown Bowl, £70 and a Skinners voucher – Bellspaddle Inspire, owned and handled by Tom Cross who was also awarded Guns’ Choice, receiving The Jed Leonard Tankard
COM – Cornwood Glorification, owned and handled by Keith Broomfield
COM – Jinkster Goldencrest, owned and handled by Mary Hogg.
All Aged Field Trial - 3rd December 2024
We held our third trial of the season, a 14-dog All Aged Stake, on 3rd December 2024 at the beautiful Englefield Estate by kind permission of Lord Benyon. Steward of the Beat was Head Keeper David Wiggins who made the club and competitors very welcome and looked after us all so well. David kindly organised a wonderful team of guns, beaters and pickers up. The guns shot beautifully and were very patient between drives while the dogs were working. Thank you to the whole team.
The day was crisp and sunny to start with but, once the sun disappeared, it was chilly and there was very little breeze. There were three drives of mainly pheasant, some partridge and a woodcock. The dogs were sent into woodland with varied cover and a deep ditch with a running stream. Some of the retrieves proved challenging, particularly when the dogs were working out of sight of their handlers. During the third drive, some of the birds fell tantalisingly close to the 6 remaining dogs and into the stream just behind them and, sadly, one dog just couldn’t resist the temptation!
Our judges were Sue Hutton, Martin Bagg, James Brindley and Alistair House and huge thanks must go to them for giving up their time to judge for us. There were five members of the GWGC Committee helping as well as some other wonderful helpers, all of whom offered so willingly to help. The helpers were Lisa Murrell (Chief Steward), Colin Pelham and Julia Reardon Smith (judges’ stewards), Jane Best and Katrina Rainbow (game carriers), Belinda Bainbridge (catering/marker) and Liz Barnes, Sue Booker and Nicky Cambrook (markers). As we all know, without helpers, these days just would not happen and we are truly grateful.
Thank you to our sponsors Silent Pool Gin and Skinners who do so much for our sport and for our club.
The results were:
1st Place, receiving The President’s Trophy, £70 and a Skinner’s voucher – Klato Isaac of Flypatch, owned/handled by Tim Brain
2nd Place, receiving a Skinner’s voucher – Fongaillo Eurydome Calista, owned/handled by James Prout
3rd Place, receiving a Skinner’s voucher – Geordieland Yarrow Marcher, owned/handled by Jane Carnaghan. Jane was also awarded Guns’ Choice, receiving The Cole Cup.
