Training

We run regular training classes during the spring and summer months with a number of trainers.  Although these classes are for members, we welcome prospective members.  If you have not been before, come along and introduce yourself and you will be put into an appropriate class.  We generally have between 3-5 groups at each training session but try to keep each group to a manageable size. The trainers, all of whom are very experienced, will adapt their classes to meet the differing needs of the dogs to ensure success for everyone.

Training starts at 10am promptly and we suggest you arrive from about 9.30am onwards.  Only one dog per handler per class please and the cost is £10 per class (payable on the day by cash or bank transfer). Depending on the weather, you may need warm and waterproof clothing, a slip lead, whistle and a canvas dummy marked with your name.  Don't worry if you do not have a dummy - they will be available to buy on the day.

The training classes in 2024 have been scheduled for the following dates:

Saturday, 17th February - Gosden Hill Farm, Merrow

Saturday, 16th March - Gosden Hill Farm, Merrow

Saturday, 6th April - Knaphill Manor, Chobham

If you would like more information about Club training, please contact our Training Co-ordinator, Lisa Murrell, at lisa.gwgc@gmail.com or 07710 147127.

If you are planning on attending a Club training session, please e-mail Lisa in advance (lisa.gwgc@gmail.com) so that she has some idea of numbers.  She won’t hold you to it but it really helps us to have an idea of how many trainers we will need for each session so that the classes are not too large.

Lisa Murrell, Training Co-ordinator

All of our classes take place outside so, before you bring your dog to a class, he/she will need to walk sensibly at heel on the lead, to be able to work off the lead and to recall to you, reasonably reliably, over short distances.  All dogs must be well socialised with other dogs. We suggest that you do not bring your dog until he/she is at least six months old.

We do not currently have a Spaniel or HPR section but recommend contacting The Kennel Club for details of clubs which provide this - https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/activities/field-trials-working-gundogs

Arun & Downland Gundog Society have an active Spaniel section and hold Spaniel training classes and we recommend contacting them - https://www.arunanddownland.com/
